I'm a firm believer that when it comes to passover recipes, the best ones are those which are basically your year round recipes, that just happen to be kosher for pesach. No funky substitutions, no complicated ingredients, just delicious food that you'll totally enjoy all year long, pesach included. So recently it hit me that a recipe I make often, for shabbos, holidays or even dinner, just happens to be kosher for passover, with only one minor … [Read more...]
Sari’s Cheesy Onion Buns
Cheesy Onion Buns are the perfect savory alternative to their sweet, cinnamon-y cousins! Photo courtesy of Sandy Eller If you've been reading this blog and following me on social media for a while, you probably already know that writing a cookbook is a TON of work. The only way to manage that kind of work, is to find people you trust, and delegate tasks to them. I first met my kitchen assistant, Sari Eller, when she was 14. I was skeptical, but desperate, so I gave her a try. At first, I gave her menial jobs, things you needed no skill for, but as I got to know her better, and as I entrusted her with more and more difficult tasks, I realized that everything I heard about her was … [Read more...]
Caramelized Onion Latkes
How do you improve traditional potato latkes? Make caramelized onion latkes! Have a question about one of my recipes? The best place to get answers is the Overtime Cook Recipes Facebook Group! This post is brought to you as part of an ongoing partnership on this blog with Lipton Kosher. Thank you for supporting the brands that help keep this blog running. Here's a little confession I have to make. With all of the crazy latkes that take over the internet each year, as chanukah approaches, I still........I still love potato latkes best. Yes, good, old fashioned, crispy, homemade potato latkes. But this year I had a thought. Instead of going crazy with latkes, why not simply add a … [Read more...]
Braised Chicken with Apples
Braised chicken with apples and sweet potatoes is a meal made in one pot, utilizing the best of fall flavors. Remember how in my last post I said that I simply can't accept that summer is over? Well that's changed. No, it's not because it's labor day as I type this. It's because I've tasted my first new-crop apple. I kind of feel like a broken record here, because this is my fourth(!) fall blogging, and thus my fourth time pointing out how crunchy, juicy, fresh from the tree apples are the best, and probably only, consolation for the end of the summer. But oh, what a consolation they are. Don't get me wrong. Peaches, plums, cherries...they're all great. But nothing like my favorite, … [Read more...]
Roasted Green Beans with Onion Garlic
Roasted Green Beans are a delicious side dish that's perfect for someone who's eating healthy! You know how I said in my last post that I find myself eating lots of the same foods, turning to old favorites, and keeping my food under my new diet pretty simple? Well then I started to think to myself...maybe some of these old favorites are simple, but who's to say y'all wouldn't enjoy some of these recipes? Well I took an informal poll on Instagram and Facebook, asking if you folks were interested in the recipe for these roasted green beans. Turns out, lots of you wanted it! So tonight I am sharing one of my favorite veggie recipes. And by that I mean, this is how my mother always … [Read more...]

Pastrami Stuffed Shells with Honey Mustard Onion Sauce
Pastrami Stuffed Shells with Honey Mustard Onion Sauce are unique, full of flavor, and a guaranteed hit! I feel like this dish should have been created ages before it was. Stuffed shells are a total staple of my cooking repertoire. I've done dairy stuffed shells, made with a cheesy filling. I've done meat stuffed shells with a ground meat filling. I've added vegetables to give it a healthy twist, and played around with spices. And suddenly when my sister and I were planning our recent holiday meals, another type of stuffed shells hit me. Why not stuff the shells with a delicious pastrami filling? And instead of the classic tomato sauce to bake it in, I knew I'd pare this with … [Read more...]
Chicken in Mushroom Sauce
I've been saving this recipe for ages. Why, you ask? Well, I don't really know. It's one of my favorite recipes to make, it's totally versatile, it's a meal in a pot, it's gluten free and healthy...do I need to go on? I was going to post this forever-ago, then I got side tracked with stuff like purim and I kinda forgot about this recipe. Then I cooked it for supper tonight (it's simmering on my stove right now and it smells amazing and I was all oh. I never posted this recipe. And then I realized how passover friendly this recipe is, and I knew it was going to have to get featured. Regarding passover (who gets all stressed out when I start discussing Passover? Just me?), this recipe's … [Read more...]
Chicken, Vegetable and Barley Soup and a review of The Bais Yaakov Cookbook
I'm super excited to be reviewing another cookbook today. I've got a bunch of books on my shelf, waiting to be written about, but this one is extra exciting because I heard so much about this book lately! I'm sure that all of my Kosher readers have heard about the Bais Yaakov Cookbook. There's been a lot of hype in the kosher world about it. I couldn't help wondering: was that earned? I finally got a chance to find out! At first glance: This cookbook looks really impressive. It's a large, hardcover book with pictures that are breathtakingly beautiful. There's a wide variety of recipes, all arranged clearly and intuitively. My first thought as I flipped through this book the first time … [Read more...]
Savory Sauteed Sweet-Peas
I first made this dish about a year ago. I know that, because it was right around the start of this blog. It was supposed to make it onto the blog, but somehow that didn't happen. I even photographed it. It's a shame that I deleted those pictures, because it would be fun to show you how my photography has changed over the years. Anyway, let's talk peas. Whenever I see that cliqued up picture of a dinner plate with the heap of super boring peas on the side, I get kind of sad. Peas have such a negative, or at very least boring reputation. But they don't have to be either of those! I've come up with a number of fun ways to cook peas, but this one is by far my favorite. It's super easy to whip … [Read more...]
