A classic cereal treat gets a favorite flavor makeover in these Cookies and Cream Muddy Buddies!
Muddy buddies will always remind me of my dorm. It sometimes feels like a previous life, but this classic cereal treat brings me back to those days. Teenagers in some little apartment, constantly noshing on junk food. With basically no kitchen equipment except for a microwave and toaster oven, we got all creative. Firstly, the school would pay for our breakfast, so we ordered lots of Chex every week. They probably thought we were big cereal eaters….I guess we were, but not in the way they intended! Next, we learned quickly all of the creative ways we could use the microwave and toaster ovens for junk food creations. The cookies we made in the toaster oven (mixed by hand, no recipe…) weren’t very successful. But muddy buddies? That worked! Melting chocolate in the microwave is super easy, and the rest comes together in minutes.
I may not be in school anymore, and I am certainly not a teenager, but c’mon, who doesn’t love this simple, unpretentious treat? Well, when I had a recent craving for it, I decided to switch up the traditional version (I do have a tendency to do that, don’t I?) and decided to make a cookies and cream version. Basically, I took junk food and made it more junky. But also, soooo delicious. If you’re an oreo lover, a chocolate lover, a cereal treat lover…or a kitchen-deprived teenager, you should really make this. Sometimes it’s good to indulge!
- 25 oreo cookies (2/3 of a package), crushed into fine crumbs (divided)
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 12 oz chocolate or chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 package instant vanilla pudding mix
- 6 cups Chex cereal
- 12 oreos (1/3 package) crushed into small pieces - NOT crumbs
- Measure half a cup of the oreo crumbs and mix with the powdered sugar. Set the mixture aside.
- Melt the chocolate and oil together, either in the microwave or using a double boiler.
- When melted and smooth, add the remaining oreo crumbs and vanilla pudding mix and until evenly distributed. The mixture will be quite thick at this point.
- Place the chex in a large bowl, and pour the chocolate mixture over it. Toss to combine. Be as gently as possible so you don't crush the cereal too much.
- Wait a couple of minutes for the chocolate to cool slightly, then pour the powdered sugar mixture over the cereal. Toss to coat.*
- Add the small pieces of oreo cookies and stir gently to distribute them.
- Serve immediately, or store in the freezer for a fun frozen treat!

I want to try this recipe!! I was wondering if anyone has seen or used the cookies n cream flavored jello pudding before? Could this be a good substitute for the vanilla pudding? And did you all use white chocolate chips for the chocolate coating?
overtimecook says
I don’t know anything about that product, but this recipe is great as written, so there’s no need to make changes.
