Wow! What a whirlwind couple of weeks it’s been! Starting two weeks ago, when I walked into the ArtScroll office and saw my new cookbook, Real Life Kosher Cooking, for the very first time! I then spent the next several hours signing the hundreds of books that were preordered. My hand hurt for a week afterward, but it was SO worth it to be able to do that for my loyal fans and followers!
Next, I spent a shabbos just staring at the book in a daze. It was dreamlike, seeing the fruition of two years worth of blood, sweat and tears!
Next came my big week! On monday, I sold books at the Jewish Food Media Conference and then again that evening at Kosher Feast! It was amazing to meet all of my fans and followers, and to meet new and old friends. Tuesday and Wednesday were KosherFest, and I sold and signed books again there as well. It was a whirlwind of good food and selfies (not to mention sharpies!) but I had a blast and loved meeting everyone!
Next, we have to talk about the outpouring of support and love that my fans have been showing since the books started showing up at their doors and in their local stores. I’m awed and humbled by how much people are loving the book, and by the sheer volume of messages, emails, facebook and Instagram posts from people all over the world, showing me their books and the food they made from it.
Behind the scenes, through this all, I was working on my launch party. A small dinner party in my home for bloggers and instagrammers, where I treated them to a meal full of food, cooked by me, my friends and my family, a beautiful tablescape, and of course, a gift bag to take home. There’s so much I want to say about this party, that it actually deserves its own post!
Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be at various events, doing demos and signing books. I love to meet you all – don’t be shy! Make sure to come over and introduce yourself if I’m in your community! I do have a limited number of dates available for demos, so contact me if you’d like to bring me out to your community! My email address is overtime cook at gmail dot com.
But anyway, I wanted to share a sample recipe from my book, which you’re going to love! It’s tough to pick one recipe to share, because I want you to see every.single.one! You’ll have to buy the book, but in the meantime, here are my sesame meatballs! This family friendly favorite is quickly becoming a fan favorite – try it and you’ll understand!
- 2 pounds ground beef
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 Tablespoons bread crumbs
- 2 Tablespoons sesame seeds
- 2 Tablespoons oil
- 3⁄4 cup ketchup
- 1⁄2 cup chicken or vegetable broth OR water
- 2 Tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 Tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 Tablespoon toasted sesame oil
- 2 Tablespoons honey
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1⁄2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 3 Tablespoons sesame seeds
- Place meatball ingredients into a large bowl; mix until combined. Form mixture into 1-inch balls.
- Heat oil in a large, deep frying pan over high heat. Working in batches, brown meatballs for about 2 minutes per side. Pour off any rendered fat.
- Add sauce ingredients to a small bowl; whisk until smooth.
- Pour sauce over browned meatballs; stir gently to coat all meatballs.
- Cover; cook over high heat for a few minutes, until the sauce is bubbling. Reduce heat; simmer for 15-20 minutes, until meatballs are cooked through.
