Sometimes I think in funny ways. Like one day I wondered what would happen if you combine a grilled cheese sandwich with a mozzarella stick. So I tried it and here’s the delicious results!
Crispy Grilled Cheese Mozzarella Sticks
Ingredients
- 12 slices white bread
- 6 cheese sticks
- 1 egg
- 1 Tablespoon milk
- 1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs
- Oil, for frying
- Marinara sauce, optional for dipping
Instructions
Cut the crusts off each slice of bread. Use a rolling pin to roll the bread out as thinly as possible.
Cut each cheese stick in half. Place a half of a cheese stick in the center of a slice of bread (place it along the length). Roll the flattened bread around the cheese stick and press tightly to seal. Roll the tips up and press to seal the ends too. Repeat with all bread and cheese sticks and set aside.
Combine egg and milk in a bowl and scramble with a fork. Place bread crumbs in the second bowl.
Heat about half an inch of oil over medium heat in a deep frying pan.
Roll each cheese stick in egg, making sure to coat it fully, then in breadcrumbs.
Fry for about a minute, until golden, then flip and fry on the other side.
Carefully remove from oil and drain on a paper towel.
Serve with marinara sauce for dipping.
Notes
Tip:
Wondering how you know when the oil is hot enough? Dip the edge of one cheese stick into the oil. If the oil bubbles around it, it’s hot enough! Make sure that the oil isn’t too hot, or the outside will burn.
Plan ahead:
These are best enjoyed fresh.
