Ever made something so good, people continued to talk about two and a half years later? That was me with these Teriyaki Chicken Wontons. I actually made them as eggrolls initially, and served them at a party. People still tell me it’s their favorite thing I have ever made, so you know it’s pretty memorable! I made the same filling into wontons, for more of a finger-food vibe, but it’s your choice – wonton or eggroll – the important thing is how incredibly delicious they are!

Teriyaki Chicken Wontons (or Eggrolls)
Ingredients
- 3 Tablespoons toasted sesame oil, divided
- 2 lb dark ground chicken
- Salt for sprinkling
- 1 onion
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 16 oz shredded green cabbage
- 10 oz shredded carrot
- 1/4 cup sesame teriyaki sauce (I used Liebers)
- 2 Tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 Tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 frozen garlic cube
- 1 frozen ginger cube
Assembly and Serving:
- About 100 wonton wrappers or 30 egg roll wrappers
- Oil, for frying
- Sesame teriyaki sauce, optional, for serving
Instructions
- Heat half of the sesame oil over high heat in a large, deep frying pan or wok.
- Sprinkle salt generously over ground chicken and add to pan. Sear, without breaking up the chicken, for about 2 minutes per side, until starting to get some color.
- Reduce heat to medium. Break the chicken up into small pieces and then remove from pan; set aside.
- Add remaining oil to pan. Add onions and salt. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened.
- Add cabbage and carrots. Stir to combine. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, for 5-10 minutes, until starting to get some color.
- Add teriyaki sauce, soy sauce, rice vinegar, garlic and ginger. Add reserved chicken back in as well. Stir to combine.
- Cook for about 5 more minutes, until chicken is cooked through. Set aside to cool. Optionally, if making wontons, you can use an immersion blender to partially blend the filling to be smaller for the wontons.
- Assemble wonton or egg rolls: Place about 1 spoonful (for wontons or 3 spoonfuls for eggrolls) of filling in the center of a wrapper. Fold wrapper around filling into desired shape. Use a bit of water to seal the edge. Repeat with remaining filling and wrappers.
- Heat about an inch of oil in a deep frying pan or pot over medium-high heat. Add wontons or egg rolls and cook about 2 minutes per side, until golden and crispy. Work in batches to prevent overcrowding. (Note that the filling is fully cooked, so you only need to cook them until the outsides are browned and crispy.)
- Serve with sesame teriyaki sauce, for dipping, if desired.
Notes
Plan ahead: These can be prepared ahead and frozen in an airtight container. Rewarm in a single layer, uncovered, until warmed through.
