On Saturday night, my amazing sister-in-law hosted a charity party for an amazing organization called Rofeh Cholim Cancer Society, or RCCS. They are an incredible organization that provides an array of services for families in my community that are dealing with cancer, including financial support, emotional support, insurance subsidies and advocacy, tuition grants, and a lot more. For those who don't know, they are currently holding a huge fundraising Chinese Auction, with local showings hosted by women in the community. My sister-in-law is awesome that way, so she hosted a showing of the auction in her neighborhood. Naturally, I stepped in to bake. I figured I would show y'all what I made, … [Read more...]
Snickerdoodle Cupcakes with Marshmallow Fluff Frosting
It's funny how certain things work out at times. Take writing for example. Honestly, it's always come very easily to me. My 12th grade English teacher once commented that I'm lucky she enjoys reading my essays so much, or she would probably fail me for turning them all in two weeks late. When I started this blog, I put a lot of thought into the food and recipes (obviously!) and of course, as you know, I thought a lot about the photography. But the writing? It was always an afterthought, just something I did in the last few minutes of my posting. And I guess it worked. Because suddenly in the last few weeks I've gotten a ton of comments from readers, both of my magazine column and my blog, … [Read more...]
Yemenite Beef Soup and a Review and Giveaway of Kosher By Design Cooking Coach
Giveaway Closed! I've been getting a lot of questions lately about my thoughts on the new cookbook by Susie Fishbein, Kosher By Design Cooking Coach, and I am excited to finally share my thoughts on this fabulous cookbook with you. I should start by mentioning that if you aren't a kosher cook, don't stop reading. Susie's ideas are amazing, and you don't have to keep kosher to appreciate them! At a first glance: As is the case with all of Susie's previous books, this is a visually beautiful book. I opened it up and marveled at the absolute wealth of information. The book promises to be more than just a list of recipes, and it certainly delivered. Each chapter starts with a "game … [Read more...]
Pecan Pie Topped Mini Fudge Brownie Pies
Let's talk about decisions, shall we? I don't know about you, but I for one, hate making them. I'm talking about literally the smallest decisions there are. Like in the ice cream store when they ask if I want chocolate, vanilla or mixed. Um, so I know I don't want plain vanilla; my love of chocolate is just too strong. But as between chocolate or mixed...I don't know! How should I decide? And when the decisions get bigger, oy. Don't get me started. I hate decisions. That's why this dessert is so darn awesome! Say you just finished a humongous meal, like, the biggest one of the year. It's time for dessert, and you don't have much room. Imagine choosing between a fudgey chocolatey dessert … [Read more...]
Healthy Crockpot Turkey Meatballs in a Tomato-Spinach Sauce
Healthy Crockpot Turkey Meatballs are a fantastic make-ahead meal that's good for you! Y'know what the worst part about commuting is? It's getting home from work at 7:30 pm on a cold, dark winter night. I step off the bus into the cold air, and all I want to do is curl up in bed in my favorite (and super cozy, albeit hole-y) gap sweatshirt, sipping on a hot drink of some sort. But then I remember that my night starts when I get home at 7:30, so instead I eat some supper and get to work. And obviously, by work, I mean baking, writing and photographing. One thing, however, is for sure. And that is that there's no way on earth I'm gonna start cooking when I get home. Not on a … [Read more...]
Cinnamon Sugar Scones and a review and giveaway of Mini Treats and Handheld Sweets
Giveaway Closed! I'm so excited to be reviewing a new cookbook today. Not just any book, but one that I'm totally nuts over. No jokes. I think the author, Abigail Dodge is my soul sister, because how perfectly me is a cookbook called "Mini Treats and Handheld Sweets?" Not only it it a cookbook full of glorious desserts, but they're mini, and pretty much every recipe in this book is right up my alley. Lets discuss this, shall we? At a First Glance: My first reaction when flipping through this book was "ohmygosh I want to make everything." The book is a treasure trove of delicious recipes that are either totally out of the box, or a brand new twist on an old favorite. (Why make carrot … [Read more...]

I found this on Pinterest and it completely describes my feelings about today: So. I didn't vote, but I did make pancakes. Not just any pancakes, but healthy pancakes. With pumpkin and all kinds of awesome spices and things. Oh and there's oatmeal in them, so they have … [Read more...]
Sandy Update: It’s the little things
My last post is begging for an update. When I wrote it, Sandy was an oft repeated name on news networks and media. It hadn't yet become a reality. And as you can see from my last post, I was in (at least) partial denial about how bad things had the potential to be. We survived Irene last year, right? How different could things be this time around? By now we all know just has different Sandy was from Irene. We all know of the destruction, the lives torn apart, the houses destroyed, the lives lost. The amazing thing is, despite the horrors that went on around us, a disaster like this brings out the best in people. Over the past couple of weeks, I've been at the receiving end of the most … [Read more...]
Golden Crunch Pudding Cookies
I am sitting here trying to think of something to say about these cookies, but I can't think of anything other than "Sandy." No, these cookies aren't sandy thankyouverymuch but there's this monster hurricane AKA Frankenstorm heading right towards the east coast. Her name is Sandy. And I have to say, if we are gonna get hit by a monster storm that'll turn our lives upside down for a bit, I feel like she should have had a more dramatic name. Hortensia, for example. But either way, Sandy is headed here, and my prep involves charging my new iPhone (oh, did I forget to tell you guys that I finally got my iPhone 5? Yeah. It's awesome.), charging my new lap top, charging my camera batteries, my … [Read more...]
Carrot Ginger Salad Dressing
Here's something you should know about me. I don't really like carrots. Not raw ones anyway. Here's something else I should tell you. I despise ginger. Especially fresh ginger. One more thing. I love carrot-ginger dressing. Seriously love it. Always have. I first tasted this dressing, like many people did, at a local Japanese restaurant. I'm pretty sure the house salad came with the entree. Oddly enough, I remember nothing about the meal but the "free" salad. Maybe that's because my mother is an amazing cook, and has an even better palate. She has this magical way of tasting something at a restaurant, closing her eyes and tasting all of the components, then going home and recreating it. … [Read more...]
