There’s really nothing quite like a crockpot dinner to make me feel like I’ve got my life together. No matter how tired I am after my work day, no matter if the house is flying, dinner is ready when I’m ready for it, and I don’t need to do anything. The fact that the house will smell amazing when you arrive home (or all day, if you work from home like I do!) is just a nice big bonus!
This Crockpot Cabbage and Beef Stew is bursting with flavor! The meat is soft and tender, and the cabbage is hearty and filling. All in all, it’s a fantastic meal for a cozy winter night.

FAQ About Crockpot Cabbage and Beef Stew
Scroll past the FAQ to get to the recipe.
Can I make this recipe in a pot instead of a crockpot?
Yes you can! Cook it on a low flame, keep an eye on it to ensure there’s enough liquid, and stir on occasion to make sure the stew doesn’t stick on the bottom. You won’t need as much cooking time in a pot as you do in a crockpot.
Can I make this without the sugar?
You can! I like to put a little sugar (even if less than the amount the recipe calls for) to balance out the acid of the tomato in the recipe, but you can skip it as well.
Can I skip the searing and sautéing steps?
I recommend doing these steps, as the texture adds a lot to the final taste and texture. However, if you’re in a rush, you can skip it and the dish will still be delicious.
Can I freeze this recipe?
Yes, this Crockpot Cabbage and Beef Stew will freeze nicely in an airtight container. However, if making this with the intention of freezing this stew, I would recommend using a pot, instead of a crockpot. See above for instructions on making this beef stew in a crockpot.
Can I make this stew using a different cut of meat?
Yes you can! Any cut of meat that does well with a low and slow, braised cook method will work with this dish. I like to use beef stew meat because it’s inexpensive, but Flanken, kolichel and other cuts will work really well too.
Can I use other vegetables in addition to or in place of the cabbage?
Sure, you can add some of your favorite veggies to this dish! Make sure to use vegetables that will hold up to long cook times, such as carrot, butternut squash, mushrooms, etc.
What can I serve with this stew to make it a full meal?
You can serve this alongside some crusty, sourdough bread, if you’d like. Another option is to serve the Cabbage and Beef stew over rice or mashed potatoes. You can also stir some cooked pasta into the dish. Whatever you serve it with, make sure it’s something that will allow you to enjoy that delicious gravy!

Hi! Can you add potatoes to the crockpot? Would that work with the flavours?
overtimecook says
Absolutely. Make sure to add extra salt as potatoes need lots of that.
Adina says
Hi 🙂 do I need to sear the meat and cook the onions before hand?
overtimecook says
For best results I recommend following the recipe as written. Any changes made will affect the recipe.

Thanks for the recipe, absolutely tasty. Used ground beef, didn’t sear it or the onions, works great
