Homemade Cinnamon Buns with Cream Cheese Frosting

October 15, 2012 by overtimecook 51 Comments

Who wants to talk about my favorite thing in the world? Wait, let's back up. Y'know how I'm always talking about how I bake all these insanely delicious treats without tasting them, because my life is basically one crazy long diet? Well. I always says that I can totally resist eating my treats when dieting. I also say that there's one treat that I just can't resist. Which brings us right back to my favorite thing in the entire world. So when I took a little dieting break for the holidays, it suddenly occurred to me. Duh. I can make my favorite treat in the world without torturing myself by not eating any. So I made them. Cinnamon Buns. With cream cheese frosting frosting slathered … [Read more...]

Pesto Potato Pinwheels

October 11, 2012 by overtimecook 32 Comments

Let me preface this post by telling you that I'm typing it up on my (barely functional and very old) iPhone 4 (because my iPhone 5 isn't expected for another two weeks- boo!) on the bus, headed home from work. And by "work" I don't mean my usual "very tame" 9 hour work day. I mean an Advil-sustained, coffee and diet-coke guzzling absolutely intense ten and a half hour work-athon. Yeah. Cause that's what happens when your company closes ten days straight in celebration of a holiday. Not fun. Wait. I should clarify. Vacation is fun. Coming back isn't. Wait, was that obvious? Also, I'm probably not coherent. Consider yourselves warned. Oh, and I'm not finished complaining about my work day. … [Read more...]

Confetti Cookies

October 4, 2012 by overtimecook 10 Comments

Why am I always writing blog posts at 2:30 in the morning? Oh, right. It's because I'm always cooking until about then. Anywho. Let's talk Yankees. I know, there was a political debate of sorts last night (tonight? This gets so confusing.) but I wasn't paying much attention because hello! The Yankees won the eastern division! Finally, right? Who's ready for post season baseball? I know I am. Wait. I think I meant to discuss cookies. Must be the hour, I guess. Well, let's get to it. This post is in honor of my friend from work, R. She loved these cookies the first time I brought them to work, and has been talking about them ever since. I hadn't written the recipe down at that point, so I … [Read more...]

Pastrami Stuffed Chicken (Capons)

September 26, 2012 by overtimecook 48 Comments

Every now and then, one of my recipes puts me in a weird position. A while ago, I made a delicious meat dish. I carefully measured the ingredients so I could post it here, and then, before I posted it, I thought of googling the cut of meat I was using. The cut was, as called in kosher butcher shops, minute steak. Kosher cooks will be very familiar with this type of steak. However, according to google (and I assume most of my non-kosher readers), minute steak is a thin cut of steak that can be grilled in a minute or less. It's a logical term, I must admit, but the minute steak I know usually involves about 200 minutes of cooking at a low temperature. Needless to say, I didn't post the recipe. … [Read more...]

Sukkos Recipe Roundup

September 24, 2012 by overtimecook 4 Comments

Here's what I was supposed to do yesterday. I was supposed to photograph this amazing appetizer recipe and post it for you folks. But then I got home from work at 7:30. You read that right. Work. On a Sunday. I don't recommend it. I got cooking right away, and at 2 in the morning I was wise enough to realize that posting the recipe at that point would have been a really bad idea. So I went to sleep for like, four whole hours. Anyhoo. Here's a handy dandy list of stuff you should totally be making for Sukkot. They are a sampling of recipes from the archives, so feel free to dig around for even more! New recipes are a'comin, I promise. Wait, I don't. I have so much left to do! But I really do … [Read more...]

Lemon Glazed Honey Cookies

September 12, 2012 by overtimecook 31 Comments

I just realized how brief my posts have been lately. I mean, I've tried really hard to post recipes, but I've been posting just a line or two about said recipes, and somewhere in the delusion section of my brain, I've convinced myself that I've got this huge and adoring fan base that likes to read my rambling thoughts and random useless observations. Yeah. So I feel like I've disappointed my fans. And by fans I obviously mean my mother and the other lady who sits in her office who like to stalk my foodgawker profile. Ahem. So I've disappointed you (and now we've established who "you" is) with my lack of writing. So I'm gonna write now. Partly because I'm on the train and reception is bad, … [Read more...]

Mini Apple and Honey Tarts and a Rosh Hashanah Blog Party

September 2, 2012 by overtimecook 54 Comments

Giveaway Closed! It's hard to believe that this entire party was conceptualized and came to this point in such a short time! About a week and a half ago, on Twitter, my friend Jessie (who happens to be one of my food photography heroes!) and I were talking about the upcoming holiday of Rosh Hashanah, and how we should do something fun to celebrate the occasion on our blogs. I don't think at that point that we imagined that it would be this big or popular, but here's the scoop: What: A Rosh Hashanah Blog Party When: Right now! Where: here, and a whole bunch of awesome blogs. Scroll down past the recipe for the list! What else: Lots! Firstly, the event is hosted by myself and Jessie … [Read more...]

Puff Pastry Pastrami Pockets

September 2, 2012 by overtimecook 16 Comments

You know those foods that are so quintessentially Jewish that everybody associates them with New York and the Jews? I'm talking about foods like K'nishes (remember how I posted a recipe to make those at home?) and a big 'ol pastrami sandwich on rye bread. With a pickle. And sushi. Okay, that last one isn't necessarily a Jewish food, but we definitely support Japanese cuisine as much as we do Chinese cuisine, in recent years. Well, here's a food that is Jewish through and through: deli roll. Honestly, I'm often surprised that this hasn't made it out of the Jewish world much, because deli roll is just plain delicious. But it's also kinda boring. At least if you're a Jewish gal from New … [Read more...]

Fruity Salad with Raspberry Zinger Vinaigrette

August 26, 2012 by overtimecook 8 Comments

There are lots of things I love about food blogging. I've mentioned some of my favorites before. But there are other, quieter and more private perks that I love too. Take today. It was a real quiet day today. I woke up late, took my time getting ready, then went to the grocery store and wondered the aisles somewhat aimlessly as I tried to decide what I'd cook today. I know, I know, that's the kind of luxury that comes with being somewhat unattached. It's also the kind of luxury that I get to validate as work. Blog work, ya know. It's all in the name of sharing great recipes with my imaginary friends at the other end of the computer. Ahem. Back to this salad. So when I finally settled … [Read more...]

Anyone reading this who's been a reader for any length of time will know that I love to bake, and more specifically, to experiment and have fun with all kinds of fun recipes. From recent recipes like S'mores Cheesecake and Zebra Bundt Cake, to older but still fun recipes like  Pretzel Coated Chocolate Cookies and Cream Cheese Swirled Chocolate Fudge Cake, I try to share fun and unique recipes with you folks. But sometimes I like to share some more basic recipes. Things like Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies and Blueberry Muffins may not be unique or different, but I definitely think they are recipes worth sharing. Today's recipe is more along the lines of the basic, staple type recipes. It's not … [Read more...]
