I feel like I spend a lot of time describing recipes as "the best" or "the most popular" or maybe "the most successful" of the sort that I have ever made. My editor mentioned it to me recently. "You know, Miriam, if you keep telling your readers that the recipe is "the best you ever made," they might stop believing you. How many bests can you have?" Well, I don't know what it is with me and all of these superlatives, but this recipe? It deserves it. You'll have to trust me where this cake is concerned. Firstly, pumpkin has a magical effect on baked goods. It turns the treat moist and soft and so plain delicious. Add spices, chocolate and some other goodies, and you're left with a bundt … [Read more...]

Apple and Cabbage Rice
Can we talk about how apples are starting to show up in grocery stores again? I don't think anyone here is more excited about it than I am. I know I have mentioned this before, but I really love apples. I've got some sweet apple recipes on this blog, but did you know apples make a fabulous savory ingredient too? This rice is totally going to prove that. It's my new favorite. Speaking of favorite recipes, this one is totally easy. And simple. It's perfect for Rosh Hashanah next week, or really for any time you want a great side dish. Who's up for a great serving suggestion? This rice would be perfect stuffed into (and under) a whole chicken and roasted. Or just served alongside some chicken. … [Read more...]
Baked Apple Pie Wontons with Caramel Dipping Sauce
These apple pie wontons are crispy on the outside, but soft, hot and cinnamony on the inside. Best of all? They're baked, not fried! I know I've been a bit heavy on the desserts here lately. I have an excuse though. Not a good one, but an excuse nonetheless. I've been working really hard on my holiday desserts for my magazine column. Seriously, really hard. You'll start to see the results soon, but stay tuned, because there's a second feature of mine coming up after the first! Anyway, baking up a holiday storm for weeks on end doesn't leave all that much room for cooking. Hence, no real food recipes. I do have some new ones coming up soon though, so stay tuned. In the meantime, I … [Read more...]
Streusel Swirled Butterscotch Bundt Cake
This recipe will always have a very dear pace in my heart. Why, you ask? Well, it's the first of my recipes to ever go "viral." This recipe was published in my dessert column in Ami Magazine a year ago, and it was crazy popular. Here's the cool thing. One of the ingredients in this cake, butterscotch chips, are only available in non-dairy and kosher through one company (that I know of). And while most kosher grocery stores in the New York area carry these chips, it isn't something that they stock large quantities of. Which was never much of an issue, until my cake recipe was published. Suddenly, these chips were nowhere to be found. Nobody had them. Any store that could get them in sold … [Read more...]
Peach Crumb Muffins
Hold on to summer with these delicious muffins - loaded with peaches, brown sugar and cinnamon, then topped with delicious crumbs! Where, might I ask, has the summer gone? Am I the only one who gets all panicky when the summer starts winding down? Did I do enough? Did I enjoy it enough? Did I eat all the right produce, have all the right barbecues, bask in the right sun? WIll I hang on to this warmth in a couple of months from now, when I'm struggling to stay warm through the cold New York winter? I don't know. I guess there's never enough of such good things. Like summer peaches. How delicious are they? And you have to admit that nothing in January will compare to the juiciness of them. So … [Read more...]
S’mores Truffles
S'mores Truffles are a no-bake way to enjoy a classic treat! So tonight's post was going to be onion rings. Those of you who follow me on Facebook know that I was seriously craving them this afternoon. Admittedly, I frequently crave onion rings. French fries are good, but onion rings? Totally blissful. But then I made a very mature decision. Instead of making onion rings, I went to the gym. I know, I know, I hardly recognize myself. Exercise over onion rings. I feel so virtuous about this I practically desserve ice cream. Moving along though. Obviously I don't have onion rings to share with you tonight. Don't worry, I didn't give up on them. I will be making onion rings eventually. But … [Read more...]
Broccoli and Quinoa Salad with Asian Vinaigrette
So I know that we've discussed the crazy sources of my recipes a few times before, but we should probably discuss it again today. The idea for this recipe struck late one night. And by late, I don't mean my usual 1-am-still-baking-cookies late. I mean almost asleep kind of late. And for those of you who know me...that's late! So I opened up one eye, opened up the notes app on my iphone, and typed "quinoa + broccoli salad." And it's been in the back of my brain ever since. At first, I was going to go with a traditional broccoli salad type dressing, but with added quinoa. Then I decided to take the flavors in a different direction. I settled on an asian-inspired dressing, and I am … [Read more...]
Citrus Shallot Salad Dressing
When it comes to eating food repetitively, I think there are two types of people. Those who are totally fine with it, and those who can't face the same food too often. My parents fall into the first category. They both have a habit of finding a food, cuisine, style of cooking, spice, or some other food they enjoy. Then they cook it. And cook it. And cook it again. And so many more times that people like me want to scream at the sight of the repetition. Personally, I need to vary my food. (I can't imagine you're shocked right now.) And while I definitely have old standby foods that I'll fall back on, I'll almost never eat the same food day after day after day. And when I do, you know that … [Read more...]
Strawberry Lemonade Sandwich Cookies
Ok, I am going to just come out and admit it. Half the reason I love these cookies is that they are so darned cute looking. Seriously, pastel shades of yellow and pink scream "spring is here!" to me. Even when the weather is screaming "sorry, spring has been cancelled this year! We're alternating between winter days and summer days until further notice." Oops. This totally wasn't meant to be a rant about the weather. But once we're on the topic, how crazy is it that in a span of a couple of days, I went from sweatshirts and shivering to how-high-does-the-AC-in-this-car-go. It's a pain trying to get dressed for the day when you have to remember that there's a 25 degree fluctuation … [Read more...]
