Skinny Iced Vanilla Latte

October 21, 2014 by overtimecook 7 Comments

Indulge yourself without too many calories or spending too much money with this Skinny Iced Vanilla Latte! Why, you might be wondering, am I posting a summery-looking, iced drink - NOW - just as the heaters are coming on, the sweatshirts are coming out of the closet, and the days are getting shorter and colder. Well, let me assure you, I have a very good reason. Well, maybe it's not very good, but I do have a reason. I love cold drinks. Summer, spring, winter, fall. It doesn't matter what the temperature is, I love my iced tea, my ice cold soda, and even my coffee is better over ice. Besides, I know that after a ton of holidays and way too much fattening food, many of you are probably … [Read more...]

October 13, 2014 by overtimecook 15 Comments

Tomato Basil Brisket cooked in white wine sauce is really delicious, and totally different! If you're one of my Jewish readers, you're probably kinda bored of holiday food. Rosh Hashanah, then the first days of Sukkot...the food feels like it never ends...am I right?  Well today I'm sharing a totally different brisket recipe. It's one I came up with when I needed something different to serve, so I feel it's pretty appropriate to share today, while you are probably contemplating food for the rest of sukkos. If you're done cooking, no fear! Tuck this gem of a recipe into the corner of your brain, and pull it out the next time you need a delicious roast recipe. And if you don't have a … [Read more...]

Roasted Sesame Broccoli

October 6, 2014 by overtimecook 30 Comments

Roasted Sesame Broccoli is a quick, easy, and tasty side dish! The way I've always cooked for holidays like Sukkot is to prepare all of the freezer-friendly dishes well in advance, then last minute, I prepare some veggie sides, which don't freeze well. If you're looking for quick and easy veggie sides to add to your Sukkos menus, I've got just the thing for you: Roasted Sesame Broccoli. When I originally made this dish, I set out to make my Honey Glazed Garlic and Ginger Sugar Snaps. I know, it's quite a stretch to get from there to Roasted Sesame Broccoli, but let me tell you how that happened. My sister asked me to make a vegetable side dish for Rosh Hashanah (I was her guest). I … [Read more...]

Fried Cabbage Wontons

September 30, 2014 by overtimecook 8 Comments

Fried Cabbage Wontons: crunchy on the outside, a savory cabbage filling, and a delicious honey-soy dipping sauce! I first made these a couple of years ago. I don't remember exactly how long it's been, but it was long enough that when I was at my sister's house for Rosh Hashanah, she pulled out a plate of cabbage wontons and mentioned it was my recipe. I was like, what? Then I remembered this delicious appetizer, and knew I had to share it with you guys! Also, my sister said she didn't think I'd mention her if something she served me over the holiday would inspire a post on my blog. Well it did, and here I am. You can all say hi to my sister - who's an excellent hostess but happened to … [Read more...]

Carrot Cake Sandwich Cookies with Cream Cheese Filling

September 16, 2014 by overtimecook 14 Comments

Carrot Cake Sandwich Cookies are perfect for fall: soft and cake-y cookies with cream cheese filling in the middle! I don't have much to say today. Or maybe I have too much to say? All I know is that I'm exhausted, thinking too much about food - holiday food in particular - and it's not even Rosh Hashanah yet. I love hearing from all of you, seeing pictures of the recipes you're making from this blog, advising you on menu plans, etc. And it leaves me wondering...are you all exhausted too? Do you feel the burnout yet? Or does the thought of having your freezer stocked with all the holiday food you could ever need keep you going? Well either way, I really hope there's room for one more … [Read more...]

White Chocolate Pomegranate Tarts

September 10, 2014 by overtimecook 10 Comments

White Chocolate Pomegranate Tarts are a dainty little dessert with a burst of fresh flavor! So, let's take a little poll here. Who's sick of me talking about Rosh Hashanah recipes? I know. I know. First there was the list of 15 desserts that you can make ahead and freeze for the holidays. Then I shared a new chicken dish that's got both apple and honey in it (I know, it's a perfect chicken recipe for Rosh Hashanah!) followed by an amazing new apple biscotti recipe. Well I aint' done yet, so stay with me folks. Today I'm moving away from the apples for a bit, and instead I'm sharing a pomegranate recipe. I love the combination of white chocolate and pomegranate, and these tarts … [Read more...]

Braised Chicken with Apples

September 1, 2014 by overtimecook 24 Comments

Braised chicken with apples and sweet potatoes is a meal made in one pot, utilizing the best of fall flavors. Remember how in my last post I said that I simply can't accept that summer is over? Well that's changed. No, it's not because it's labor day as I type this. It's because I've tasted my first new-crop apple. I kind of feel like a broken record here, because this is my fourth(!) fall blogging, and thus my fourth time pointing out how crunchy, juicy, fresh from the tree apples are the best, and probably only, consolation for the end of the summer. But oh, what a consolation they are. Don't get me wrong. Peaches, plums, cherries...they're all great. But nothing like my favorite, … [Read more...]

Homemade Mango Lemonade

August 28, 2014 by overtimecook 12 Comments

Homemade Mango Lemonade is simple to make and is bursting with seasonal flavors.  I'm sorry folks, but I'm just not ready to accept that summer is nearing an end. It's hard to ignore the signs, but I'm trying my best. Pinterest is no longer filled with juicy berries and heirloom tomatoes. Family barbecues are getting less frequent, and the weather is getting cooler. But it's still august, and I'll post a summer recipe if I want to. The pumpkins can wait. So can the apples, the fall spices, the warm fall flavors. Today we can have a tall glass of homemade lemonade, served over ice. Hold on to summer, it's fleeting, but it's still here. This Homemade Mango Lemonade couldn't be simpler. … [Read more...]
